Hi, I’m Shanay!
I'm a content curator, social media manager, creative writer, brand specialist, and much more!
Education
I love people, the art of storytelling, and the ever-advancing forms of sharing information!
This passion for prose led me to study Print Journalism at University of Texas at San Antonio, and Broadcast Journalism at Sam Houston State University.
Career
My love for broadcast journalism began in the early nineties glued to my television set watching local legends like Marvin Zindler and Melanie Lawson on ABC 13 Eyewitness News, Mike Barajas on FOX 26 News, and the CBS Evening News hosted by fellow Sam Houston alum Dan Rather.
At the end of my enrollment at Alief Taylor High School, I decided to channel my academic strengths in creative writing towards an exciting career in journalism!
I was published for the first time in The Paisano as a contributing writer and photographer during my brief tenure at UTSA. After transferring to Sam Houston State, I remained concrete in laying down the foundation of my career as a multimedia journalist. Four years' worth of experience as a contributing writer for The Houstonian, on-air personality for 90.5 The Kat, producer and reporter for Cable 7 News ushered me into the world of broadcasting! After graduating in 2012, I strengthen my media muscle through positions as a volunteer reporter with Houston Television (City of Houston).
During my employment with Cox Media Group, home of 93Q Country, 106.9/107.5 The Eagle, and 97.1 Country Legends, I excelled in social media management and audio engineering. I was responsible for creating engaging online content and setting up live broadcasts at local events.
In my recent roles in facilities management and office support, I have consistently leveraged my media expertise to enhance my duties. I designed compelling marketing materials for company-wide events, led impactful presentations, and edited crucial written correspondence. These experiences also allowed me to develop my skills in event planning, budgeting, and client interactions.
Currently, I’m seeking more freelance opportunities where I interview, photograph, and promote Houstonians on the rise! I'm always monitoring the latest trends and advancements in mass communications, and committed to receiving mentorship from experienced digital strategists to strengthen my skills.
My dream career remains to collaborate with journalists and brand specialists as driven and curious as I am to provide exceptional results and make a positive impact on clients and the community.
Creative Projects
Photography (family and event), exploring new attractions around Houston and featuring them on my Instagram, event set-up, and designing digital correspondence are just a few of my favorite projects!
These are done primarily for enjoyment and to challenge myself. I also get to know some pretty awesome people in the community and develop skills directly applicable in my professional life.
